How many marks is this bit worth? 4
How many pages should it occupy? Maximum 2
Although you are going to make one product, when developing
your design you need to write about how this might be
made in a batch of 50 (in school). How will batch production
affect your choice of materials and components, tools,
equipment, and processes? You must also develop what is called a “control
system” and use it when making. This might be
a pattern, template or jig, which could be used repeatedly,
or a CAD design, which is cut on a CNC machine. The
designs for this must be shown.
Your circuit board is going to be CNC drilled so that the holes are in exactly the right location. We could (and have, of course) manufacture a batch of identical circuits. Please mention this!
The fact that you are going to program a PIC chip with a flow diagram, and that the flow diagram could be repeatedly and identically downloaded to an unlimited number of PIC chips, is another example of a 'control system'. Please mention this, too!
The following should serve as a useful checklist if you want to achieve full marks:
- Look through your specification; does the product that you have designed meet the criteria?
- Have you produced an accurate, scale, ProDesktop/2D Design drawing of your final design?
- Have you produced a wire-frame drawing that allows you to see how the components will be arranged inside the product?
- Do you have orthographic drawings of the seperate pieces of of your project with dimensions?
- Have you made it clear what materials you are going to make your product from?
- Have you made it clear how they are going to be cut or shaped?
- Have you made it clear how they are going to be joined?
What feature(s) of the way you are making your product would also be good for batch producing 50 of them?
- What will be the total
cost of your individual product?
- How much would it cost to make 50 of them based
on the reduction in costs when components are bought
in bulk? (Look at the Rapid website to see how the cost decreases when you order over a certain number).
