After deciding upon which materials, production methods and pre-manufactured standard components are the most suitable for the textile product, it is important that all of your decisions and choices are collated and full details about the final product given. The most successful way to do this is through the use of a product or manufacturing specification. This specification will be the basis of all manufacturing processes to follow so it needs to be very detailed. You could complete a manufacturing specification in a variety of ways:
* Chart format – using text and basic drawings to explain all relevant details
* Working information sheet – combining text with design and modelling techniques to explain all relevant details.

The product specification should include:
1. Construction details, including details for seam finishes, embellishment techniques such as batik, tie dye, etc. as well as type of sleeve or hem detail. Scan in the fabric construction method or add work to examples for visual effect.
2. A list of materials and components to be used including fibre content, weight, number of components used on the product, fastenings with measurements such as zips. Add actual examples of materials.
3. Time estimate and, ideally, details of the production method used. There should always be reference to production in batches.
4. A list of equipment.
5. Care labels.
6. Stitch details and machine settings. Worked examples could be shown.
7. A detailed outline of the product, including both the front and back views, dimensions or critical measurements, positioning of embellishment techniques, a brief description of each area of design and quality check guidelines. Keep the design simple. Colour is not necessary.
